Gazette-Mail editorial: Problems in sports point to something bigger

Turns out, the recent fights between Nitro and Shady Spring that led to six ejections in the West Virginia Class AAA prep football playoffs were merely the undercard to something bigger and nastier.

A whole nation watched as players from Ohio State University and the University of Michigan mixed it up at midfield Saturday after the unranked Wolverines had pulled off a shocking upset, beating their arch rival and (before the game) assumedly playoff-bound Buckeyes, 13-10, in Columbus.

The brawl started after Michigan players attempted to plant a school flag on the Ohio State logo at midfield in the Horseshoe. Players for Ohio State took exception, and fists began to fly. A thin, beige and black line of security representing multiple law enforcement agencies from Ohio and Michigan, could be seen between the mass of white Michigan jerseys and the scarlet worn by the Buckeyes.

It wasn’t a good look for either team, or for college football. It got worse when the cameras broadcasting the game focused on two Michigan players who had made their way to the sidelines, squinting their eyes in a way that made it obvious they had been pepper-sprayed.
