Fresh, healthy food on a school cafeteria tray if it was bought with a program begun during the COVID era? Not if the federal government has any say in it, which it does.
Any aggressive, hasty and ideology-driven program will have what is euphemistically called “collateral damage” — unintended harm or damage to innocent people. Such is the case with a recent move by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to cancel ongoing programs initiated during the COVID years.
As detailed by HD Media reporter Katelyn Aluise in a recent article, the USDA made an agreement with the state in January 2023 to begin a program called Local Foods for Schools (LFS) that would supply local school districts with more than $1.2 million in funding. This school year, the USDA agreed to award West Virginia schools more than $3.7 million.
