CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — The West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission (WVSSAC) has postponed the state volleyball tournament for one classification due to ongoing legal issues related to recent reclassifications.
These changes, initially announced in December 2023, impacted various teams and sparked challenges, leading to reassignments for the 2024 fall sports season. This reclassification included 22 football teams and affected other sports, including volleyball.
One key issue stemmed from Tyler Consolidated High School’s volleyball team, which shifted from Class A to Class AA under the new four-class system. The school contested the change, and a judge’s decision in late October allowed Tyler to compete in Class A. However, the timing of this decision meant Tyler was unable to participate in regional matches, where teams qualify for the state tournament.
To address this situation, the WVSSAC initially announced an additional play-in game for Class A, pitting Tyler Consolidated against St. Marys High School for the final seed in the state tournament.
