CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Just over a week before the start of the 60-day legislative session, Nicholas County delegate Caleb Hanna has resigned from the House to focus on his campaign for state auditor.
Hanna, a Republican, announced the resignation in a letter to the House Clerk dated Jan 1. In March, Hanna made public his intentions to seek state office.
“My decision is driven by a strong desire to dedicate my full attention and efforts to my campaign for the position of state auditor,” Hanna wrote in his resignation. “I believe this role offers a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on the financial well-being and transparency of our state government.”
Youngest African-American delegate ever elected to state office
Hanna was elected to the House of Delegates in 2018. At age 19, he was the youngest African American ever elected to a state office nationwide.
During his time in the Legislature, Hanna represented parts of Nicholas, Webster and Greenbrier counties. He has served as the assistant majority whip, chairman of the Select Committee on Minority Issues and vice chairman of the Select Committee on Prevention and Treatment of Substance Abuse.
