CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Democrats from West Virginia are traveling to Chicago to attend the Democratic National Convention, which begins Monday. Convention-goers are tasked, among other things, with nominating an unexpected presidential ticket.
Following President Joe Biden’s decision in late July to withdraw from the race, Vice President Kamala Harris emerged as the presumptive nominee and later chose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate. The West Virginia Democratic Party has endorsed both candidates and is sending a state delegation of more than 25 people to Chicago to nominate the Harris-Walz ticket.
According to a news release from the West Virginia Democratic Party, among the delegates are Kathryn Prather, 18, who recently graduated high school in Ohio County, and Jean Evansmore, an 83-year-old Black woman from Fayette County and lifelong civil rights advocate.
“Their participation highlights the inclusivity and forward-thinking values of the Democratic Party,” the news release stated.
