Wheeling couple’s grandson escaped shooter’s path unharmed

WHEELING, W.Va.  — Carol and Walter Austin watched in horror from their Wheeling home as news of a shooting at Parkland High School in Parkland, Fla., unfolded on the TV screen Wednesday afternoon. Their grandson, Charles Austin, 15, is a freshman at that high school.

Carol said she immediately called her son, Randall, Charles’ father, to learn the fate of their grandson.

“Randy told me he had talked to Charles and that he and a friend ran from school, jumped over a fence and got away,” Carol said, her voice cracking with emotion.
