WHARNCLIFFE, W.Va. — About 30 residents in the Wharncliffe/Ben Creek areas gathered at the Wharncliffe Church of God Monday evening, Aug. 4, to learn more details about an ammonia facility and connected data centers being proposed for construction in that area of Mingo County.

Monday’s meeting was the result of a two-week community door-to-door campaign to inform residents about the project, as well as to let them know about the ensuing meeting. Both the door-to-door campaign and meeting were co-conducted by Mariah Clay with the West Virginia River Coalition and Tyler Cannon from the West Virginia Citizens Action Group.

Cannon and Clay used the meeting to go over many of the finer points of the facility’s construction. They expressed concerns over the potential environmental and health impacts related to the produced blue ammonia’s toxicity, as well as concerns about the potential hazards of ground water pollution, the potential harming of animals and fish, and the degradation of air quality that would impact the health of the elderly and those people already suffering from breathing disorders.
