CHARLESTON, W.Va. — On the ninth day of a statewide teacher strike, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice signed a bill giving state employees a 5 percent raise, the signal teachers needed to head back to their classrooms.
“Back to class!” teachers in the Capitol cheered after the signing.
Despite being at an impasse Monday night, Senate and House of Delegate leaders reached an agreement around 1 a.m. Tuesday to give teachers, service personnel and state police a 5 percent raise, with the promise to give all other state employees a 5 percent raise in the budget.
