HUNTINGTON, W.Va  — Between 3 and 4 inches of snow is projected to fall along the Interstate 64 corridor Thursday, according to the National Weather Service’s Charleston office, with high temperatures only reaching into the upper 20s.

Snowfall will peak around Thursday evening and push overnight lows into the upper teens or low 20s, depending on how fast the snowfall ends, said weather service meteorologist John Victory. The Huntington and Charleston metros along I-64 are projected in the maximum axis of regional snowfall, which extends from eastern Kentucky east to the Appalachians.

All counties in the area are under a winter weather advisory from 9 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday. Snow will fall during a roughly 18-hour window during that time, Victory said, with temperatures remaining well below freezing into the weekend.

The more normal winter pattern predicted by forecasters contrasts slightly to the comparatively more pleasant December in the area. The average temperature in Huntington was 1.6 degrees above normal in December 2016.

The city of Huntington’s Public Works Department began treating bridges, underpasses, main routes in the downtown area and around hospitals Wednesday afternoon, city officials stated. Crews used a truck to distribute brine, a liquid salt mixture commonly used on roads before snow and ice start accumulating.
