West Virginia Senate President Randy Smith ‘blindsided’ by sale of Hopemont Hospital

TERRA ALTA, W.Va. (WV News) — West Virginia Senate President Randy Smith said he was given only minutes of advance notice before Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced the state was selling four health care facilities.

Smith said he “was blindsided” by the news, especially as one of the facilities to be sold is located in his hometown, Terra Alta.

“We knew like 10, 20 minutes before the rest of the world knew,” Smith said, referring to himself and House Speaker Roger Hanshaw. “The other senators found out when he (Morrisey) made the press conference.
