WASHINGTON — Tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act will enable a shuttered nuclear power facility in Pennsylvania to reopen, according to Sen. Joe Manchin, I-W.Va.
Credits included in the 2022 legislation played a key role in a deal between Constellation Energy and Microsoft that will see operations restarted at Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station, Manchin said in a release.
“To ensure our nation’s power grid can handle the increasing energy demands of AI and manufacturing, we must utilize all our available resources, including nuclear power,” Manchin, chair of the U.S. Senate Energy Committee, said. “I am glad to see Constellation and Microsoft working to restart the Three Mile Island facility and bring much needed reliable, 24/7, clean energy onto the grid to protect our energy security.”
The facility, located south of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was the site of a partial nuclear meltdown in March 1979. The incident is considered the nation’s worst commercial nuclear accident, which significantly curbed nuclear energy development in the United States.
