BECKLEY, W.Va. — The Mountain State’s roads fell 11 positions from No. 25 in the nation all the way to No. 36, according to a recent report by the Reason Foundation.

The California-based libertarian think tank publishes its Annual Highway Report which ranks the nation’s roads based on data compiled from reports filed by each state to the federal government.

The study ranks each state in 11 categories: total disbursement per mile, capital and bridge disbursement, maintenance disbursement, administrative disbursement, rural interstate pavement condition, urban interstate pavement condition, rural arterial pavement condition, urban area congestion, deficient bridges, fatality rates and narrow road arterial lanes.

West Virginia, the sixth-largest state-controlled highway system in the nation, did well on low spending but not so well on the conditional aspect of the state’s roads.

Based on the libertarian ideals of low governmental spending, the study ranks West Virginia No. 1 in total disbursements per mile, spending only $35,047 per mile.
