HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — West Virginia ranks as the second most dependent state on the federal government, according to a new study by SmartAsset, a New York-based a financial technology company.

“We analyzed data across four metrics to find the states that are most dependent on the federal government, and West Virginia ranks in the number two spot,” according to Derek Miller, SmartAsset’s data journalist who performed the analysis.

The study looked at percent of state government revenue which comes from the federal government, the percent of workers employed by the federal government, the quality of federal jobs and the ratio of income taxes paid compared to money received from the federal government.

The data showed that over 35 percent of West Virginia’s government revenue comes from the federal government.

“That’s the 15th-highest number in our study,” Miller said.
