CHARLESTON, W.Va. —  West Virginia first lady Cathy Justice chose a clear Blenko pitcher, adorned with a gold image of West Virginia, as her signature 2018 state artisan piece.

Justice plans to introduce the glass piece during a special Valentine’s Day event at the Culture Center at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, which will be followed by a public reception.

This limited-edition piece – only 100 pitchers were made – is a collaborative effort between Justice, Milton-based Blenko Glass and the West Virginia Division of Culture and History.

“I am honored to have had the chance to work with Blenko and Commissioner Randall Reid-Smith to create a one-of-a-kind glass piece for West Virginians to enjoy,” Justice said in a news release. “As we designed this pitcher, it was my intention to showcase Blenko’s stunning glass work, as well as the beautiful shape of our great state.”

The crystal pitcher features crackle glass, which has an uneven surface resembling cracked ice and is made by taking a gather of molten glass and blowing it into a small bulb, then treating the surface by rolling it on a special surface before it is dipped swiftly into cold water, according to information from the office of the first lady.
