CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The new finance subcommittee for Gov. Jim Justice’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Four-Year Higher Education plans to recommend increasing funding for the state’s smaller colleges by $10 million annually.

Subcommittee members’ comments Thursday shed doubt on whether they’ll have consensus behind a college funding formula in the near future. The small group hasn’t yet approved an official report of their recommendation.

Of the $10 million, couched as a restoration of past funding cuts, Bluefield State College would get $568,000, Concord University would get $1.8 million, Fairmont State University $2.6 million, Potomac State College of West Virginia University $302,000, Shepherd University $2.8 million, West Liberty University $1.4 million and West Virginia State University $484,000.
