HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Vatican has granted its official blessing to the proposed acquisition of St. Mary’s Medical Center by Cabell Huntington Hospital, the last step required before the $165 million transaction could be finalized.

St. Mary’s will retain its name and remain a Catholic-affiliated healthcare facility after ownership is transferred from the Pallottine Missionary Sisters to Cabell Huntington, according to a joint release.

The two hospitals will be unified under a new, single healthcare system while keeping their individual identities, said Dr. Kevin Yingling, chairman of Cabell Huntington’s Board of Directors.

Vatican approval was required for the Catholic sisterhood’s business to be sold.
