Understaffing creates problems for behavioral health centers in West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — In ResCare Agency facilities throughout West Virginia, doctors’ appointments are missed and some patients’ needs are not met, according to nine substantiated complaints filed with the state Office of Health Facility Licensure and Certification from 2017-18.

Among other services, the company provides care for people with extreme physical and mental disabilities. Nearly all these complaints pertain to some sort of staffing issue. Sometimes, it’s medication being administered incorrectly; other times, it’s an inadequate amount of staff being available.

In one case, a patient ran away because of a lack of supervision from direct care workers.
