Tips given for suicide prevention during West Virginia’s holiday season

By Logan D. Cottrell, WV News

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — As the holiday season brings a rise in loneliness and depression for many, West Virginia Prevention Solutions is stepping up with suicide prevention training and resources aimed at saving lives and fostering community support, according to Victoria Cooper, MSW, an adult prevention specialist at the organization.

“We offer QPR training,” Cooper said. “QPR stands for question, persuade and refer. We also provide safeTALK training, where you learn how to directly ask about suicide, refer individuals to resources, and actively listen without dismissing or avoiding the signs and symptoms.”

Cooper emphasized that a variety of resources are available for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts.

“One of the biggest ones is 988,” she said. “You can call, text or chat online. 988 also provides help for veterans — just press two.”

Additionally, Cooper mentioned a national text line that allows individuals to reach out for assistance via text messaging.

During this time of year, Cooper recommended that anyone who has previously felt depressed or suicidal create a safety plan.
