“West Virginia: Adapting to Marketplace Changes” is the convention theme. One of this year’s sessions centers on advertising opportunities and focuses on that theme.
Legal advertising and digital advertising are at opposite ends of the newspaper-advertising spectrum. Legal advertising, by state code, serves as public notice and is featured in print editions of W.Va. newspapers. Digital advertising, by design, is not featured in print editions of W.Va. newspapers.
However, both are important to the reader, the advertiser and the newspaper. During this seminar, we’ll look at some legal and digital advertisers’ goals and needs, discuss what can be done to increase and improve such advertising, and review ad placement. We’ll also discuss the endemic nature of these types of advertising and how that can impact our newspapers editorial content and presentation.
Mike Queen, Deputy Chief of Staff/Communications Director, W.Va. Secretary of State’s Office. Queen will discuss operations at the WVSOS and details of the upcoming Oct. 7 Special Election and other election legal advertising issues.
Tom Stewart, teaching Assistant Professor, WVU Reed College of Media; Stewart teaches news reporting courses as well as the Media Ethics and Law course. Prior to becoming an educator, Stewart worked at the Tribune-Review in Greensburg, Pa. Stewart works with WVPA on educational programs, open meetings, public notice and legal advertising issues.
Chelsea Ruby, Commissioner, W.Va. Division of Tourism. Ruby will outline the Division of Tourisms goals for marketing West Virginia’s tourism opportunities, along with ongoing digital and social media efforts.

The moderators: Don Smith, executive director, West Virginia Press Association; Pam Bennett, advertising director, Wheeling News-Register and The Intelligencer. Bennett will lead discuss of ideas for maximizing the results, benefits and opportunities for digital and legal advertising.

Convention 2017 brings together media leaders, industry experts and other stakeholders to examine issues from all points. Whether you work at a news, advertising, H-R or publisher’s desk, the issues up for discussion this year will be of interest.
Be it the “A ordable Care Act” or “American Health Care Act”, what does the changing health care landscape mean for the people of West Virginia and news coverage, advertising, and newspaper industry employees and operations? Friday morning, a panel of experts looks at the possibilities. We need to be informed.
Public notice is the traditional source of journalism and a keystone of the newspaper industry. Digital advertising is one of the fastest growing aspects our marketplace. Friday afternoon we look at both areas and the newspaper industry’s responsibilities and opportunities.
On Saturday, we take a more focused look at the West Virginia newspaper industry’s future with our
“WVPA Ownership Initiative.” As a generation of publishers look at handing over leadership of their operations, the WVPA looks at how newspapers are valued today, market conditions and prospective new owners. Expect invaluable information from a panel including a newspaper broker, a banker, and tax and other industry-related experts.

During a weekend when we focus on the future, we will also celebrate our past with a Hall of Fame program and our present with a Pulitzer Prize Luncheon celebrating Eric Eyre of The Charleston
Gazette-Mail winning the Pulitzer Prize for investigative journalism.
We’ll also recognize all of the other outstanding newspaper industry work in West Virginia this year with our Editorial and Advertising awards presentation.
