Thousands of West Virginia teachers crowd the Capitol for eighth day of statewide walkout

CHARLESTON, W.Va.  — As West Virginia students were missing an eighth consecutive day of classes on Monday and school administrators in all 55 counties called off classes for Tuesday, some state senators were peeved with what they saw as a lack of urgency in addressing teacher pay.

A conference committee was scheduled to meet late Monday to hammer out differences between the House and Senate as teachers and other public employees packed the state Capitol.

During the Monday morning floor session, Sen. Corey Palumbo, D-Kanawha, said he doesn’t believe the Senate has treated the situation with urgency.

“Where is the sense of urgency to resolve this and get the kids back in school,” he asked the chamber. “Where is the sense of urgency? I don’t understand why we don’t have that sense of urgency.”
