Teachers look to help young West Virginians understand gravity of 9/11

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — For Americans who lived through Sept. 11, 2001, the date carries profound weight, but for today’s middle and high school students, it’s just another entry in their history textbooks.

Educators are constantly looking for ways to make 9/11 feel personal to students who weren’t alive to remember it. 

“I was actually a freshman in college at West Virginia University when 9/11 happened,” said Brent Kimble, a social studies teacher at Bridgeport High School. “The hardest thing that I have found about teaching 9/11 is that the kids have no personal connection to the events of Sept. 11, and it’s been that way for six or seven years now.”

To bridge this gap, Kimble created a “9/11 Conversation” assignment, where students interview relatives, teachers or neighbors who lived through the attacks to gain a more personal understanding.
