Tax reform bill moves on in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Senate Select Committee on Tax Reform approved its tax reform bill March 13, with a few amendments, morning and sent it to the Finance Committee.

The revised bill changes how and when the personal income tax is phased out.

Members also approved a package of amendments proposed by Sen. Ed Gaunch, R-Kanawha, to SB 335. The package exempts Social Security income from West Virginia personal income tax. That would result in a net state revenue loss of $90 million.

To offset that, three taxes are increased: the “pop tax” and two alcohol taxes.

Members unanimously approved the amended bill in a voice vote.
