CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The GOP faithful, including those from the Mountain State, are descending on Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention (RNC) which begins Monday.
“It’s our opportunity to make our voices heard at a national level,” said Matt Herridge, chair of the West Virginia Republican Party (WVGOP). “I do believe West Virginia is going to get some positive attention [at the convention].”
Herridge, a businessman from Wood County, said the West Virginia delegation includes around 100 people, consisting of 32 delegates, 29 alternates and around 50 guests. A number of candidates running for state office will be part of the delegation, including Attorney General Patrick Morrisey who is running for governor and is a delegate chair, as well as “folks from all walks of life,” Herridge said.
And those delegates are walking into an RNC landscape that Herridge says is changing by the minute.
“There are so many things that are going to happen over the next two weeks,” Herridge said, referring to recent questions surrounding President Joe Biden’s campaign and the GOP convention generally. “Throw in that we’ll probably be hearing who former President [Donald] Trump’s nominee for vice president will be and so that’s going to bring a lot of energy.”
