Unfilled police positions create daily adjustments, impacts

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — Two vacancies out of more than 30 staff positions may not seem like a major problem for an employer. But according to local officials, those personnel shortfalls have significant implications for the well-being and priorities of Jefferson County’s law enforcement departments.

“Being down two [police officers] in a smaller community like ours is a big deal,” said Chief Deputy Victor Lupis with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. “It’s important for us to provide that minimal staffing of deputies per shift so we can make sure citizens are getting adequate coverage.”

Right now, the sheriff’s office has three vacancies out of a total of 36 positions. One applicant is presumably joining the force in a week or two after training, Lupis said.
