State GOP seeks candidates

The Dominion Post

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.  — The state Republican Party is seeking eligible candidates to replace Sen. Kent Leonhardt, R-Monongalia, who will resign effective midnight Jan. 15 to become the new secretary of Agriculture on Jan. 16.

Leonhardt represents the 2nd Senate District, which includes all of Calhoun, Doddridge, Ritchie, Tyler and Wetzel counties and portions of Gilmer, Marion, Marshall and Monongalia.

Candidates must reside in the district. Residents of Marshall County are not eligible because newly elected GOP Sen. Mike Maroney is from the county.

According to a party press release, the Senate District 2 Republican Committee convened and announced the process for filling the vacancy. As per state law, the committee must submit three eligible Republicans to the governor who will then select the replacement from those names.

Interested individuals must submit a resume and cover letter to the West Virginia Republican Party. Resumes must be received by noon Jan. 20. The information should be emailed to [email protected]; mailed to P.O. Box 2711, Charleston WV 25305; or faxed to 304-768-6083.

Candidates will be contacted for interviews that afternoon.

Interviews will be conducted on Jan. 23 in West Union at the West Union Public Library, 170 Marie Street.
