CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State Board of Education approved a takeover of Mingo County Schools during its regular monthly meeting. The state declared a state of emergency for the county.
During its meeting March 12, the WVDE Office of Accountability reviewed findings of a Special Circumstance Review of Mingo County Schools related to local board member effectiveness. The state board was provided an update on the findings of this review to consider possible action.
After a two hour executive session, the board members took a quick vote to take over Mingo County Schools operations. State Superintendent Michele L. Blatt said the Mingo County Board failed to act on a statutory obligation, which interrupted the day-to-day operations of the school system.
