WHEELING, W.Va. — West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice is expected to officially announce today that Jeff Stephens, a West Virginia studies teacher at Sherrard Middle School, will fill the District 6 seat in the House of Delegates representing Marshall County.
Stephens got the call from Justice’s chief of state Brian Abraham Wednesday morning, just in time to tell his second period class.
The Republican will succeed former Delegate Charlie Reynolds, and he plans to run for election next year.
“There will be a press release (today),” Stephens said. “I asked Brian Abraham, and I was told I could tell people.”
After telling his students of his new opportunity, he said they cheered and congratulated him. But they also expressed concern.
“They didn’t want me to leave, but I told them I’m only leaving for 60 days during the regular legislative session,” he said. “If I had to leave them for any longer than that, I don’t think I could have done that.”
