Seafood Nutrition Partnership Charleston kicks off National Seafood Month with Charleston SeafoodFest

Release from Charleston SeafoodFest:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. —The non-profit Seafood Nutrition Partnership’s (SNP) Charleston coalition will host its free Charleston SeafoodFest on Saturday, September 30, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Capitol Market.

This family-oriented community event will focus on the health benefits of seafood with free omega 3 testing by nurses from West Virginia University’s School of Nursing, cooking demonstrations by some of Charleston’s notable chefs, a live radio remote by Electric 102.7, and children’s activities and crafts including face painting, balloon animals and a photo contest.

Featured guests at SeafoodFest include SNP President Linda Cornish, who will briefly speak about the progress of the SNP campaign in Charleston; Joe Hankins of The Conservation Fund and the Freshwater Institute in Shepherdstown, which is donating West Virginia farm-raised salmon for the event; and Dr. Tania Babar, a Charleston cardiologist and SNP coalition member.

Seafood cooking demonstrations will be hosted by Chef Paul Smith of Buzz Food Products, Chef John Wright of Bridge Road Bistro, Chef Jeremy Sprouse of The Chop House, Chef Evan Wilson of Ichiban, and Chef Ron Allen of Tidewater Grill. Each chef has selected one of their favorite seafood dishes to feature during their demonstration.

This event kicks off the third year of SNP’s public health education campaign in Charleston to help Kanawha Valley residents and West Virginians learn how to improve their health by eating seafood at least twice a week, as recommended by the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Only 10 percent of Americans currently follow this recommendation. People who eat seafood twice a week benefit from an average daily intake of 250mg of essential omega-3s, along with a variety of vitamins and minerals.

“Charleston SeafoodFest promises to have something for everyone,” said SNP Charleston spokesperson Steve Morrison. “At the suggestion of our coalition members, we’re introducing fun activities for kids and families to bring more people together to share their love of seafood, and to learn how important seafood nutrition is as part of a balanced diet that supports better health, especially for the heart and brain.”

During October National Seafood Month, SNP Charleston will hold educational events and partner with community leaders and Kanawha County Schools to encourage all West Virginians to take the Healthy Heart Pledge as a commitment to eat more seafood and supplement their diets with omega-3 fish oil.
