Public memorial service for Justice Cleckley to be held at WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.  — West Virginia University will be holding a public memorial service for Justice Franklin D. Cleckley at 2 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Lyell B Clay Concert Theatre.

According to university officials, Cleckley was the first African-American faculty member at West Virginia University College of Law, the first full-time African-American professor at West Virginia University and the first African-American justice on the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia.

Hon. Dwane L. Tinsley; Hon. Margaret L. Workman; Joyce M. McConnell, WVU provost; David Fryson, WVU vice president; Gregory Hinton, attorney; Gail T. Henderson-Staples, president of the Mountain State Bar Association; and members of the Cleckley family will all be present to speak in memory of Cleckley.
