Prep notebook: A timeline of the 2024 W.Va. high school football season

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — If the 2024 high school football season in West Virginia was a movie title, it would be “Dazed and Confused.”

Multiple injunctions that followed reclassification and the playoff seeding structure have resulted in much confusion and plenty of upset individuals.

Here’s a timeline of what has occurred:

Dec. 20, 2023
The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission board of directors approved implementing a four-class system for five sports — football, volleyball, baseball, softball and cheerleading.

Boys and girls basketball had been playing with four classes since 2020.

This was also the same day revised numbers for reclassification were released.

Aug. 13
A Review Board decision upheld an appeal of the football reclassification by 11 schools. The seven person Review Board is appointed by the state superintendent of schools.

Those teams included:

AAAA to AAA: John Marshall, Oak Hill, St. Albans, Preston and Spring Valley
