PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — Architectural Digest Magazine has named Parkersburg High School one of the 50 most beautiful high schools in the nation.

The school was included in a list of buildings in all 50 states featured on Architectural Digest’s web page.
“The Tudor-style building of Parkersburg High School was constructed in 1917 on a site that was once a swamp,” the entry says. “Before the swamp was drained, students entered the building via a boardwalk.”
The story includes a picture of PHS from the Library of Congress.
“I looked at hundreds of public high schools across the country, methodically going through statewide school rankings to be sure I saw as many as possible,” said article author Stefanie Waldek. “After viewing dozens of schools per state, I selected ones that were architecturally significant — typically historical buildings, though some modern ones stood out too. And then I narrowed down my selection to one per state, making an aesthetic judgment.”
Parkersburg High School recently celebrated its 100th anniversary and is one of the oldest high schools in West Virginia.
