National Rafting Championships in W.Va. to send teams to World Championship in Australia

BECKLEY, W.Va. — The 2018 U.S. Rafting Association National Championships were under way Saturday on the Upper Gauley River, and teams that won will head to the World’s Competition in Australia slated for May 2019.

According to Jeremiah Peck, race director for the U.S. Rafting Association, the races have taken place on the New and Gauley rivers within the past week, and Saturday’s race was designated as the “Down River Race,” where both men’s and women’s teams competed to see who could make it down the Gauley River the fastest.

“We’re looking to see who can make it through those awesome Class IV rapids the fastest,” Peck said. “Although these are serious races, it’s great that they get to take place in West Virginia. It’s some of the best whitewater.”
