MU projects $1.4 million loss in research funding

By Katelyn Aluise, The Herald-Dispatch

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall University could potentially lose $1.4 million in funding for indirect cost recovery for health research as a result of a proposal by the National Institute of Health to reduce facilities and administrative funding.

Grant funding caps for research were announced by the NIH last month via the social media platform X.

In the announcement, NIH said $9 billion of the $35 billion it granted for research in 2024 was used for administrative overhead, also known as “indirect costs.”

“NIH lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government to 15%, above what many major foundations allow and much lower than the 60%+ that some institutions charge the government today,” the announcement continued. “This change will save more than $4B a year effective immediately.”
