‘Mother’s worst nightmare’: Cross Lanes Child Care Center families speak out

By Ashley Perham, Charleston Gazette-Mail

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Eight families plan to sue Cross Lanes Child Care and Learning Center following a teacher’s arrest for alleged abuse of her students.

Amber Elizabeth Seiler, 29, was arrested Friday on felony and misdemeanor abuse charges relating to her class of 4-year-olds at the facility. The arrest came the day after an audio recording was posted to Facebook that appears to depict Seiler spitting on a student.

First lawsuit

Darrel Feaster is the grandfather and legal guardian of the 4-year-old child who allegedly was spat on, according to a lawsuit filed by the family on Monday. The lawsuit also alleges that Seiler made the child pull her pants and underwear down so Seiler could spank the child.

Feaster said the child had been at the facility on and off for several years. He removed her after allegations of abuse against a different teacher in 2021 that resulted in a civil settlement.

“I didn’t think this could happen again,” he said. “I would think that they would be more careful with how they screen teachers. I’ve never just had a reason to think that my child wasn’t safe at her day care.”
