Little Coal Poker Float set for Saturday

MADISON, W.Va. — The Little Coal River Branch of the Coal River Group will be holding a family friendly fundraising event on Saturday, Aug. 26, to promote tourism and use of the of the Little Coal River.

The Little Coal Poker Float is a fund raising event with the proceeds to be used to improve the Little Coal River, according to a news release. The event is a “poker run” on the river where participants will draw cards along the route and the person with the best poker hand at the end of the day will be declared the winner.

The grand prize is an Emotion Spitfire kayak courtesy of Cabela’s at Southridge. Additional prizes will also be awarded.

To join in the event, you are asked to make a $25 donation to the Coal River Group.

An event T-shirt and food is included with your registration.

The event will begin at the Madison Recreation Center (old Haddad Swimming Pool) on Old River Road in Madison and end at the Helen Sanders Park in Danville. Late registration will begin at noon and the float will start at 1 p.m.

Even though most participants will be riding kayaks, any type of boat will be allowed to be used and you must follow West Virginia boating laws in order to participate.

“We are using the event to promote local tourism and to raise awareness of the Little Coal River,” explained Joe Linville, chairman of the Little Coal River Branch of the Coal River Group. “River traffic on the river has really increased with local residents over the past couple of years and now we are ready to share our best kept secret with the rest of the world.”

The organization would like thank the following business’ for supporting the organization and event: K-Bo’s Ice Cream; Shaffer & Shaffer, Attorneys at Law; State Sen. Ron Stollings, MD; Thompson Rentals; and Boone Memorial Hospital.

The event was scheduled for earlier this year, but was postponed until this Saturday because of weather and river conditions.
