WESTON, W.Va. — As inflation has driven gasoline prices up worldwide, Lewis County stands out as one of the most affordable locations to buy gas in West Virginia.
Among counties across the state, Lewis County continues to provide budget-friendly fuel options, helping residents and travelers save money at the pump.
John Deskins, director of the West Virginia University Bureau of Business and Economic Research, said while he doesn’t know why it is like that in Lewis County specifically, there are plenty of factors that contribute to why that is in general.
“There are a few things that drive gas prices. One thing is transportation costs. If we have a refinery and the distributor located here, then gas stations that are closer to that will be able to buy gas more cheaply than gas stations further away because transportation costs are lower,” he said.
“Taxes are also a driving factor. If you look at gas stations on each side of the state line, like between West Virginia and Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania has higher taxes on gas. And as a result, they have higher gas prices than in West Virginia.”
