By Jeff Hynes, Charles Town Councilman
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — I want to congratulate the Jefferson County Commission on its recent purchase of its new buildings on Lawrence and North George Streets in beautiful Charles Town.
The Commission has explained in numerous meetings, reports and presentations why it believes this purchase filled a vital need for the future of our county. The commission has explained that replacing old, poorly maintained, and unhealthy buildings will save hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual operating costs. I have attended meetings in the new facilities and came away impressed.
As a member of the Charles Town City Council, I admit I was a little envious of the sound system and seating. I truly hope this investment of public funds meets the commission’s goals for the county’s future.
I also greatly appreciate Commission President Majdi’s recognition of the role our “Historically Hip” downtown plays in the county’s success. These historic blocks, thriving businesses and engaged residents are central to our shared vision. We want downtown Charles Town to continue to be a jewel that draws visitors, residents and new businesses to this great county. I appreciate the commission’s willingness and eagerness to work with Charles Town to facilitate the city’s purchase of the soon-to-be-vacated county buildings on East Washington Street.
That said, in my view as one Council member: thanks, but no thanks.
