CHARLESTON, W.Va.  — An inmate at the Mount Olive Correctional Complex was killed Sunday evening after an apparent assault by one or more fellow inmates, Lawrence Messina said.

Eugene Robert Anderson, 66, was fatally injured around 6 p.m. in an outdoor recreation area. The facility was immediately placed on lockdown, according to Messina, spokesman for the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety.

A makeshift weapon has been recovered. No one has been charged in the incident. The West Virginia State Police are investigating, he said.

Anderson was serving sentences imposed in both Kanawha and Wood counties for multiple sexual offenses involving minors. His minimum discharge date was in 2148.

Originally from Parkersburg, Anderson also had a sexual offense charge pending out of Ohio that he was scheduled to serve following the consecutive West Virginia sentences, Messina said.

Anderson was previously a professor at Marietta College, he said.
