In West Virginia, after failed drug tests, some miners lose hope

BECKLEY, W.Va., — Some of the coal miners — they never hear from them.

The people at the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training don’t know whether they overdose and die, whether they get into treatment, whether they find other jobs.

But for those who do call, it’s often the same story.
