In flood waters and bracing for more in Eastern Panhandle

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Despite flooding throughout the area, officials are focused on preparing for the potential impact from hurricane Florence and encouraging residents to be prepared as well.

Sunday and Monday’s rainfall led to many flooded basements and fallen trees, according to Capt. Greg Hoover of the Martinsburg Fire Department.

“My crawl space is 5 feet high and there’s got to be 5 and a half feet of water,” said Martinsburg resident Estelle Matthew. “It’s in my yard and in my neighbor’s yard. I’m concerned for my neighbors, because they’re losing much more than I am.”
