SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — With small- and big-game hunting seasons set to begin, West Virginia hunters should start scouting, inspecting equipment and honing their skills before heading out to their favorite hunting spots, according to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

Mast crop quality and quantity are good indicators of the possible productivity of hunting areas, and according to the mast surveys conducted this year, an above-average mast crop is expected, according to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
In order to keep this hunting season as safe as possible, the Division of Natural resources suggests that archery hunters be in practice by this time of year; tree-stand hunters practice from various stand heights and angles and check safety harnesses for possible damage; and rifle hunters should “zero” their firearms to ensure ethically proficient accuracy.
For more information on hunting season dates and bag limits, consult the 2017-18 West Virginia hunting and trapping regulations, available at all license retailers or at www.wvdnr.gov.
