Hopemont bill overhauled

CHARLESTON, W.Va.  — The bill to sell Hopemont Hospital in Terra Alta was overhauled March 23 to make provisions for staff and patients.

House Finance took up a new version of HB 3102.

It orders Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) to sell Hopemont, but doesn’t address selling empty beds.

It says DHHR must assure that a replacement facility of at least 60 beds is built, “to accommodate the needs of the patient population at Hopemont” and will be operated to serve the variety of conditions of Hopemont residents.

The bill passed unanimously.

Delegate Linda Longstreth, D-Marion, proposed the quoted phrase to make sure the patients are cared for, but said she still won’t support the bill.

“Yes, the amendments made it better. I will still vote against this. I think we are rushing into something we don’t know where it’s going.”
