ELKINS, W.Va. — Randolph and Upshur County residents will be among the 100 military veterans getting to visit Washington, D.C. on Sept. 14 through the Clarksburg Honor Flight to see war monuments and memorials that have been built in honor of veterans.
The Clarksburg Honor Flight will take off from the North Central Regional Airport in Bridgeport on Sept. 14, taking 100 West Virginia veterans to Washington, D.C. to see the monuments and memorials, as well as tour the city, before returning to West Virginia the same day. The Honor Flight has made trips to D.C. since 2017.
Billie Jo Claypool, the Clarksburg Honor Flight coordinator, told The Inter-Mountain there will be four veterans from the Korean War on the flight, as well as one World War II veteran from Monongalia County. The rest are veterans of the Vietnam War.
“We’ll fly in and we’ll divide up,” Claypool said. “We’ll have four busloads of veterans touring D.C.”
Beyond the war memorials, the veterans will also be taken to Arlington Cemetery, where they will see the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and watch the changing of the guards. The Air Force Memorial in Arlington is also on the stop list.
