Herald-Dispatch Endorsement editorial: Experience the deciding factor in judicial races

Following months of observing an unprecedented attempt to clear West Virginia’s entire Supreme Court from the bench, voters are now being asked to show up to the polls next month to select the two newest members of the state’s highest court.

In August, all of the justices of the state Supreme Court were impeached following accusations of extravagant office renovations and mismanagement of state funds. Two resigned amid the scandal, necessitating the addition of the races to the Nov. 6 ballot.

With massive candidate pools totaling 20 court hopefuls — 10 running for each open seat — it can be overwhelming to even know where to start determining for whom to vote. The situation is a first in West Virginia history and has not been seen elsewhere. The race is non-partisan; candidates have had relatively little time to campaign and only a handful boast name recognition that goes beyond their home counties.
