Harrison County (West Virginia) law enforcement, school officials caution residents on spreading misinformation amid school safety concerns

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Harrison County law enforcement and school officials held a press conference Thursday urging parents to stop the spread of misinformation after a day of fear and confusion at many county schools.

After a number of threats to Pennsylvania and West Virginia schools that were found by the FBI to be non-credible, misinformation spread among the parents of many schoolchildren in the local community.

“A lot of information over the last few days has been thrown out, and we diligently, collectively and unified have looked into every scrap piece of information that we possibly could come by,” said Harrison Sheriff Robert Matheny.

Early Thursday morning, dozens of parents arrived at Robert C. Byrd High School to take their children home after social media posts circulated alleging the school would be targeted for an act of violence.

Parents on scene said they received texts and calls from their children, who were upset and crying and asked to be taken home because they were afraid.
