GRID to go on the grid in Montgomery

Charleston artist Leah Towler works on an oil painting in the space for artists in The GRID (Generate, Renew, Innovate and Design) education/innovation center this spring at BridgeValley Community and Technical College in Montgomery. Towler, who works primarily in oils and watercolors, has named this particular piece Mountain Mama. The April sneak peek of the multi-use facility included introductory remarks by Dr. Eunice Bellinger, the BridgeValley president, as well as hands-on demonstrations and public tours of the facility at 807 2nd Ave., which formerly housed engineering and printing labs and classrooms. On Friday and Saturday, BridgeValley will officially open The GRID, offering a number of free and fee-based sessions for members of the public. Pre-registration is required, even for the free sessions.

MONTGOMERY, W.Va.  — BridgeValley Community and Technical College will open its “Generate Renew Innovate Design” space, or GRID, on Oct. 12-13.

Officials see GRID as a place where creative energy, civic spirit and resources will converge to unleash innovation, seek new enterprises and invest in the region’s people and the city’s downtown. GRID is a unique concept that combines the robust elements of a business accelerator with the creative environment of a Makerspace. Machining tools and equipment will be available to infuse a once-popular arts culture with fresh ideas and networking opportunities.

“The GRID offers a space to generate creative and entrepreneurial opportunities for our community members,” BridgeValley President Eunice Bellinger said in a press release. “By bringing experiential learning and apprenticeships to the region, BridgeValley is innovating the way education is delivered to our resident artists and community.”
