MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The owners of Hastings Family Farm are concerned for its future due to upcoming construction on Greenbag Road.
Greenbag Road will be modified to divert trucks from traveling through Downtown Morgantown. The plan is to widen the road and add two roundabouts: one at the intersection of Kingwood Pike and one at Mississippi Street.
Construction efforts will cut into the farm, threatening its land and the Conscious Harvest Cooperative, a community garden that provides land access for individuals who want to grow food.
The farm, located near the Kingwood Pike intersection, is owned and operated by siblings Jennifer, Mary and Ted Hastings, producing hemp, garlic and hops.
While the siblings own 40 acres of land, only two and a half acres are farmable. They said construction plans are continuously changing as work is being completed, and they are unsure of the exact acreage of land that will be affected.
