GRANTSVILLE, W.Va. — He was a quiet and unassuming man, but he was one of the most powerful and knowledgeable persons in the last 50 years of Calhoun County history.
Milford Newton (Newton) Nichols the former long time editor of the Grantsville News and the Calhoun Chronicle passed away leaving a void that won’t soon be filled.
Newton moved to Grantsville from Clay when he was in grade school after his parents bought the Grantsville News back in the 1950s. As the son of a newspaperman and printer learning the trade fell upon him if for no other reason those were the chores his father gave him.
But it turned out he loved doing those things.
He also loved sports, and he ended up being an expert in both fields. At least when it came to Calhoun County.
