FAIRMONT, W.Va.  – Seeing teachers throughout the state fighting for better rights as public workers is problematic for Anna Runyan in more ways than one.

The Fairmont Senior High School (FSHS) senior has been out of class along with the rest of the state’s public school students for a few days, but it’s the teachers’ situations that has her concerned for her own future.

“I want to go to school to be a teacher and we just wanted to come out in support for all they’ve done for us in school,” Runyan said.

In response, Runyan used her senior class president status to organize her fellow students to picket alongside the teachers Monday while they were out of class. A group of students first took to Fairmont Avenue with picket signs and polar bear suits in support, before later joining their teachers outside the school.

“We like school being out, obviously, but we want to support our teachers for what they’re doing,” said Nate Scott, an FSHS senior who also wants to be a teacher. “They’ve really shown that if you want to get something done you’ve got to fight for it.”
