Expert says Independence Day celebrations hold risks for pets

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The Fourth of July tradition of fireworks is enjoyed by many, but the flashing lights and loud sounds that come along with them are not as fun for animals.

To dogs, fireworks present a threat, said Dr. Victoria Shamblin, a veterinarian with the Shenandoah Veterinary Clinic in Martinsburg.

Shamblin said there are two main reasons that animals, specifically dogs, are afraid of fireworks. First, dogs hear at a much louder frequency than humans.
